The phrase “it takes a village to affect change” developed a new meaning for the Lipnicky family in February of 2019, after what began as shoulder pain for Olivia Lipnicky- the 8-year-old daughter of Brian and Emma Lipnicky and older sister to her brother, Jack- turned into the unnerving diagnosis of a spinal cord tumor, later identified as a diffuse midline glioma on March 1, 2019.

    Bill Boglioli: Family, Community, Dedication

By Community Magazine | Comments Off

Two of Central Jersey’s most cherished institutions, the Woolley-Boglioli and Holmdel Funeral Homes have been caring for Monmouth County families for generations. Originally founded by the Sexton family in 1882, the Long Branch location took on the Woolley name in the 1920s, when Willis A. Woolley joined the business. Woolley would later become the owner of the funeral home and continued to build its practice and reputation.

A Perfect Pairing: Chef David Burke & Suzanne Sicora-Ludwig Prepare for Taste of the State 2023

By Community Magazine | Comments Off

Chef David Burke & Suzanne Sicora-Ludwig team up to help Soup Kitchen 411 combat food insecurity while supporting local restaurants. The COVID-19 pandemic hit the state of New Jersey particularly hard. With over nine million Garden State residents living in close proximity, it was anticipated early-on that coronavirus would be difficult to contain. Aware of this possibility, in early 2020, the state government ordered the temporary closure of many businesses and services to ensure that New Jerseyans limited their exposure to one another, the idea being that reduced public contact would curb the spread of the virus and hasten the end of the pandemic.

Jersey First! A Discussion with NJ’s First Lady Tammy Snyder Murphy

By Community Magazine | Comments Off

“Central Jersey does exist,” New Jersey’s First Lady emphatically stated. “I know because it’s where I live.” “The nice thing about living in Central Jersey is that it means I can stay out of the fray when it comes to the North Jersey/South Jersey divide debate,” she joked. Tammy Murphy and her husband moved to Monmouth County twenty-five years ago and settled in Middletown Township. Their careers had brought them to Hong Kong for a time, and when they were relocated to New York City for work, the Murphys began looking for places to live in the region that would meet their needs and enable them to commute to the city.

The Other Side of the Fence: Naval Weapons Station Earle

By Community Magazine | Comments Off

For most people driving along Route 34 or over Normandy Road, Naval Weapons Station Earle (NWSE) appears to be simply the woods on the other side of the fence. Of course in the back of one’s mind there is always the knowledge that there is something important going on behind the scenes that keeps us safe but for so many that mystery was always in the shadows. Then in the middle 2020 Captain Ed Callahan assumed duty as Commanding Officer, and despite the challenges of the pandemic, he has been steadfast in his determination to show the importance of NWSE not just for protecting our country but also serving as an invaluable resource to our local community.

    Full STEAM Ahead

By Community Magazine | Comments Off

Q: What can occur when a motivated individual acts on an idea and enlists the community to make it a reality? A: STEAMpark, a non-profit organization to inspire life-long learning. Five years ago, Leigh Dym— concerned about both the lack of after school activities for underserved children, and scarce activities for all those not involved in sports—decided to act. She recruited many of her Rumson neighbors to set up programs focused on STEAM: Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math. And so began STEAMpark, an organization dedicated to helping children in kindergarten through eighth grade to each reach their full potential, regardless of income or zip code.

By Community Magazine | Comments Off

Meet Tom Paolella Enjoy the Process is a saying that applies to many events in our lives— for most people, shopping for a car or truck is not one of them. One common complaint is a lack of confidence that the dealer has offered the best price. (Remember the Seinfeld dealership episode and the line item for “additional overcharge”?) Others find it tedious, confusing, or time-consuming. Then there is Tom Paolella who embraces the process. Nine years ago, Tom founded Car Concierge Plus, a unique service to level the playing field between dealers and buyers.

Kristina grew up in Colts Neck and credits her versatile background in preparing her for the many roles involved in managing a business. Perhaps most striking is Kristina’s ability to engage with people. She was awarded the titles of Miss Congeniality and Most Photogenic as a finalist in the Miss Massachusetts USA Pageant in 2016, and the Best Interview Award in the 2012 Miss New Jersey USA Pageant. She has a sense of adventure, sparked by her stint as a flight attendant at age 19, and an appreciation of service from her time in the restaurant industry. She studied journalism while living in Hawaii, finished her degree at Boston University, worked as a news producer in New Hampshire, fund-raised for the Human Rights Campaign in DC, and volunteered as a “discharge buddy” at Boston Children’s Hospital.

Calling All Rumson, Fair Haven, Little Silver & Shrewsbury Football Players!

By Community Magazine | Comments Off

This November 24, 2017 at Count Basie Field in Red Bank will mark the 16th consecutive “Black Friday” when Little Silver and Shrewsbury residents will square off in a flag football match, formerly known as “The White Road Cup”. The game had always been played on White Road in Little Silver where Red Bank Catholic football practices, which happened to be the border of the two towns. What started in 2002 as a pick-up event among a few friends, has now grown into a colossal community fundraiser helping to tackle hunger with Lunch Break as its sole benefactor.
