Holmdel Mayor DJ Luccarelli and the Township Committee announced that they will be sponsoring a donation drive to provide aid to those affected by this month’s earthquake in Turkey and Syria. All members of the Holmdel community and our neighbors are invited to participate. Donated items can be dropped off in the lobby of Holmdel Town Hall, located at 4 Crawfords Corner Road. The Monmouth County Park System will hold its annual E. Murray Todd Half Marathon on Sunday, March 12. This 13.1-mile race takes runners through Lincroft, Holmdel and Colts Neck. The race begins at 8:30 a.m. at Brookdale Community College, 765 Newman Springs Road, Lincroft. Race medals will be awarded to all registered finishers. Two local favorites were back for a rematch with Delicious Orchards defending its title against Huddy’s Inn. CNBA President Dino Nicoletta welcomed those present with committee woman Sue Fitzpatrick who led the committee that organized the event. The day included the presentation of the honor guard of colors by the Colts Neck High School ROTC; Captain Ed Callahan, commander Naval Weapon Station Earle, led the Pledge of Allegiance; Greg Penza sang the National Anthem; Pastor Chris Durkin of the Colts Neck Community Church offered an invocation.

There is an expression that “bad things happen to good people,” and so it was for local “good guy” Ed Harris and his family. Ed succumbed to complications from COVID-19 in a hospital early last year, before very much was known about the disease. The diagnosis, and restrictions on visiting, blindsided and devastated his family. “We could not visit our dad in the hospital due to strict rules, so all we could do was pray. As he slowly got worse, we made sure to stay strong for our mom,” recalled his sons, Nick and Jeff. Although the family could not physically be with him, Ed was surrounded by the love of his family and the community, and the affection continues.

The 8th annual Two Cup Regatta – the Mayor’s Cup and the North Jersey Yacht Racing Association’s (NJYRA) Irwin Bowl – was held simultaneously on July 3rd on the Navesink River, starting in Fair Haven from the Shrewsbury River Yacht Club (SRYC). The Keelboat Class and Mayor’s Cup went to Lou Moore and Michael Wiehl on the “Lynn” sailed out of Fair Haven Yacht Works. Announces 2021 Parade Charity Recipient: With the help of the Rumson St. Patrick’s Day Parade Committee, a host of community activities that will raise awareness and funds for local non-profits is already underway. In September, the Parade Committee hosted its seventh annual Erin Open Golf Tournament and the second annual Pickleball Clinic at the Rumson Country Club. The shotgun tournament began early in the morning with a solemn tribute to honor and remember those lost during 9/11. Middletown resident 9-year-old Natalie Gorsegner was diagnosed with high-risk acute lymphoblastic leukemia in August of 2012. She underwent over two years of aggressive chemotherapy and has been in remission since November of 2014. While the Gorsegner’s are grateful for their daughter’s survival, they know all too well that many families do not share their same good fortune as childhood cancer is the leading cause of death by disease for our kids here in the United States and unfortunately funding for childhood cancer research is extremely limited (in over 25 years only three new drugs have been developed for any type of childhood cancer)! Inspired by their own daughter and the thousands of other fighters, the family launched their grassroots foundation, Infinite Love for Kids Fighting Cancer.

This November 24, 2017 at Count Basie Field in Red Bank will mark the 16th consecutive “Black Friday” when Little Silver and Shrewsbury residents will square off in a flag football match, formerly known as “The White Road Cup”. The game had always been played on White Road in Little Silver where Red Bank Catholic football practices, which happened to be the border of the two towns. What started in 2002 as a pick-up event among a few friends, has now grown into a colossal community fundraiser helping to tackle hunger with Lunch Break as its sole benefactor. In recent years, the participants have raised over $25,000 and donated trucks full of clothing and non-perishable goods to those in need.
